Side-stepped Trouble

As I wrote in my previous entry, I had two issues that frustrated me; broken dipstick tube stuck in my timing cover and two sized studs in the manifold.

I decided that I would move forward and yank out the studs. At the base of the studs (where they contacted the aluminum manifold) there was corrosion (dissimilar metals) leading me to believe that if I attempted to remove the studs, they would break off in the manifold creating yet another problem. Instead of using a double nut, I just grabbed the stud with vice grips and started turning. The first stud came right out. I repeated this on the second stud and the result was the same as the first.

With both studs out, I installed the new thermostat and housing with the new bolts and installed the new thermostat bypass hose.

My second issue required me to use a tool I didn’t have. I borrowed a set of easy-outs from my brother-in-law proceeded with much trepidation. With a ball-peen hammer, I tapped the medium size easy-out into the broken tube. I reached down with a wrench and started to turn the tool/tube. The easy-out loosened up so I needed to tap it in with a bit more force.

With the tool firmly wedged in, I grabbed it with vice-grips and pulled upwards and the tube broke free from the timing cover. The hole was now clear for me to inspect and install the new dipstick tube.

Now it is time to locate top dead center (TDC) and install the new distributor and ignition system.
