Today, I cut off the stubborn, rusty battery tray bolt from the apron (I previously tore off the crusty battery tray, leaving a piece surrounding the bolt). I grabbed a cutting disk fixed to my ancient corded Black and Decker drill and took the head right off, leaving behind the shaft and the body nut. With a quick tap of a screwdriver, the hole was clear,
Now the metal preservation and paint prep begins for the battery apron area. I just ordered the bolt kit for the new tray and I have already begun the tedious effort to clean away 40 years of paint and minor surface rust.
One glaring issue (to me and any other Mustang enthusiast is that my radiator support is going to need replacing prior to the next paint job. My old battery which sat in the car for 13 years experienced some corrosion at the positive post and subsequently made contact with the radiator support. The corrosion left a nickel-sized hole in the sheet metal which I will try to mask by cleaning the jagged edges. The top of the radiator support is wavy from a prior collision (the previous owner) which will be masked with a radiator support seal.
I pulled the carburetor (Holley 4160, 600 CFM) for rebuilding and replacing the electric choke mechanism. I also pulled the fan and pulleys for some rust abatement and painting. I will eventually replace them with a billet aluminum set.
